Where Are We?

Serene Fox Farm is located in Sunflower County Mississippi in the northwestern part of the state, about 7.1 miles (as the crow flies, henceforth referred to as ATCF) NNE of Shaw, Mississippi, 9.1 miles SSE of Cleveland,  7.7 miles WSW of Doddsville, 12.0 miles  N of Indianola.

Serene Fox Farm is located in the heart of the Mississippi Delta at 33° 37’ 38.93” N, – 90° 39’ 23.52″ W. Well, it is not actually in the heart of the true Mississippi River delta.  The true Mississippi River delta covers nearly the southern third of Louisiana where the river spreads out forming sweeping coastal marshlands and where the freshwater of the Mississippi River empties into the Gulf of Mexico.  We are some 300 miles north of the true Mississippi River delta, but we are at the epicenter of the Yazoo-Mississippi Delta (henceforth just the Delta).  The Delta has been called “The Most Southern Place on Earth”  and is as different from the rest of Mississippi is from the other states in the union.

The dark green is bottomland hardwood forest, The two lighter greens areas are CRP conservations areas. The photograph on the left is the view of the main field on the first day I visited the farm.

We are a small working farm growing soybeans and corn.  We farm what seems like a garden plot to our neighbors, but the entire farm is truly a work in progress.  Our goal is to combine a small farming operation with our conservation efforts.  At present we are participating in a farmland reforestation program and have converted approximately 50 acres into hardwoods.  Additionally, last summer 2020 we created a seasonally flooded impoundment for migratory waterfowl.  That is a hi-falutin’ way of saying that created a pond that can be flooded during the migration.  Residual corn or soybeans left in the field after harvest constitute a good food source for certain species of migratory waterfowl.

So if you are ever in the area and want to pay us a visit, find your way to Shaw, Mississippi.  We like to say that we are two hours from almost anywhere, but once in the Delta we are relatively easy to find.  Once in Shaw, turn east on Mississippi Highway 442/448 at our one and only traffic light and continue for 6.8 miles.  There you will turn left onto an unmarked (locals seem to have an affinity for removing road signs and markers) gravel road that is Charlie Ellis Road.  Head north on Charlie Ellis Road which magically turns into Fox Road for 1.8 miles.  Look for 374 Fox Road and you will have found us.
